Objective
Design an app for young minds, ages 4-12, who just can’t seem to get enough screen time but enjoy discovering interesting facts about the things invisible to the naked eye. Create a space for AR interactivity where users can import 3D models of specimens into their living room while listening to fun facts about them.
Client
PBS Kids
The Problem
PBS Kids wanted to expand on their mobile science collection to offer a more in-depth experience for their target market. Based on the usage data collected in their Play and Learn Science app, users are especially interested in exploring microbiology. PBS Kids wanted to build a new app designed with enhanced interactivity for that subject, so we focused on what we could accomplish with the camera and AR technology.
This would require building a space for AR interactivity where users could import 3D models of specimens into their living room while listening to fun facts about them. Users should also be able to watch colorful and educational animated clips, browse through a gallery-style encyclopedia, take snapshots of their findings, and store captured specimens in their history. Using the built-in phone camera, images of specimens could be captured and analyzed, with enhanced magnification if the microscope attachment add-on is purchased.
The Approach
The app design was made with children in mind, characterized by fun colors, silly vectors, and 3D models. To capture the attention of young minds, we selected colorful and educational animated clips and focused on enhancing interactivity by giving users the ability to browse through a gallery-style encyclopedia, take snapshots of their findings, and store captured specimens in their history.
The Solution
myAR LensLab allows your child to discover the microscopic world around them through the combined powers of augmented reality and portable magnification. Kids can look up-close at real specimens, and then find out more about them with the microscope’s built-in learning system. Within the app, they can play with interactive 3D images, watch colorful animations, and hear more fun facts about what they are looking at through the microscope. While your little scientist is having a blast with an immersive at-home laboratory experience like no other, you can rest easy knowing their screen time is productive at last.
Available on smartphones and tablets with an optional microscope lens add-on that attaches to the camera for an enhanced experience of up to 600x magnification.
